# OEE Metrics in Practice – How to Measure Them?

OEE (Overall Equipment Effectiveness) is the gold standard for measuring the effectiveness of machines and production lines. Despite its apparent simplicity, many companies make mistakes in its calculation and interpretation. In this article we explain how to measure OEE correctly and how to use that data for real improvements.

## What Exactly Is OEE?

OEE is the product of three metrics: Availability, Performance, and Quality. A result of 100% would represent perfect production — zero downtime, maximum speed, zero defects. In practice, world-class manufacturers achieve an OEE level of 85%.

## Availability — the First Pillar

Availability measures the percentage of planned production time during which the machine is actually running. It accounts for planned and unplanned downtime, breakdowns, changeovers, and waiting for materials. Formula: Availability = Run Time / Planned Production Time × 100%.

## Performance — the Second Pillar

Performance compares the actual production speed with the nominal speed of the machine. It accounts for micro-stoppages, reduced-speed operation, and other speed losses that are often invisible without detailed monitoring.

## Quality — the Third Pillar

Quality is the ratio of products conforming to specification to the total number of units produced. It includes production defects, products requiring rework, and start-up losses.

## Most Common Mistakes When Measuring OEE

-   Excluding planned downtime from the calculation — understates real losses
-   Using averages instead of per-shift data — hides variability
-   Lack of definition standardization across plants — comparisons become meaningless
-   Measuring OEE without root-cause analysis — the metric alone is not enough
-   Manual data collection — delays and inaccuracies

## From Measurement to Action

The OEE metric itself is just the beginning. The real value emerges when you analyse the causes of losses in each of the three categories. Pareto analysis lets you identify the most significant problems and focus efforts where they will have the greatest impact.

> OEE is not an end in itself — it is a diagnostic tool. Treat it like a thermometer: measuring temperature alone does not cure an illness, but without it you do not know whether the patient is healthy.
